Similar to a printed press release, a VNR or Video News Release is a pre-recorded news or feature story that is distributed by satellite to TV stations for public relations or promotional purposes. Using broadcast television production quality and techniques, a VNR is a great way to get your story placed within the context of a TV news program. Nearly all US newsrooms use VNRs regularly to help complete their programming needs. Encoding and Tracking Video

700+ broadcast facilities are notified of the content, time and satellite your video is to be aired. Video or live broadcasts are encoded using Catalyst Learning’s Sigma encoder system. The code is placed on the upper edge of the video and is invisible to viewers. Encoded video is sent up to the satellite where it is beamed down for broadcast facilities to record. When the broadcast facilities air the encoded video, Nielson tracks the signal. Nielson records the station airing the encoded video and the estimated audience size. Data summary includes: Broadcast station, Market, Rank, Air Date/Time, and Estimated Audience.
