COMMON TERMS
The following list defines common terms used in the area of distance
and Elearning.
CBT
Computer-based training, typically delivered on CD-ROM, or from a mainframe.
Distance learning
The use of telecommunications technology to reach an audience when
the presenter is in one location, and the audience is in another location.
Downlink
The process of receiving a broadcast signal from a communication satellite.
E-Learning
Delivery of formal and informal learning / training activities, processes,
communities and events via the use of electronic media: Internet, intranet,
extranet, CD-ROM, videotape, DVD, TV, cellular telephones, personal
organizers.
Teleconference
The use of telecommunications technology (satellites) to reach an audience
when the presenter is in one location and the audience is in another
location. (Also known as distance learning.)
Uplink
n. The satellite dish and electronics, which transmit a signal; can
be fixed or portable.
v. To transmit a signal to a satellite.
Videoconference
Two-way video and audio connections generally used as a meeting tool
to compensate for distance between meeting attendees.
Video news release (VNR)
Similar to a traditional press release, a VNR is televised news or
a feature story that a company will send to TV stations, usually for
public relations and promotional purposes. A VNR can be transmitted
by videotape or satellite.
WBT
Web-based training, “self-paced” or asynchronous training, delivered
using an Internet browser.
